HOW TO MAKE SOAP AT HOME AND OTHERWISE LIVE OFF THE LAND
COMPILATION AND COMMENTARY
BY LUCY WARNER
APRIL 26, 2020

WHEN I WAS IN MY TWENTIES IN CHAPEL HILL, NC, THERE WERE COUNTER-CULTURE YOUNG PEOPLE, SOME MARRIED AND SOME UNMARRIED, WHO DID THINGS LIKE MAKE HOMEMADE AND VERY BEAUTIFUL CANDLES AND SOAP. THEY HAD A SPOT ON THE SIDEWALK ON FRANKLIN ST. WHERE THEY GAVE AWAY THEIR CANDLES FOR FREE IF YOU BOUGHT A HASH PIPE ALONG WITH THEM. THEY DIDN’T SEEM TO BE IN DANGER OF ARREST, PROBABLY BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T ALSO SELL THE STUFF THAT WENT INTO THE PIPE.

THEY ALSO WERE CONCERNED ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT, ESPECIALLY DESTRUCTION OF HABITAT FOR WILD CREATURES AND POLLUTION ISSUES. OUR MODERN AWARENESS OF THE EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING (CLIMATE CHANGE) IS LINKED TO THIS “BACK TO THE LAND” MOVEMENT, AND THE EFFECT OF AIR AND WATER POLLUTION IS STILL PROBABLY OUR WORST PROBLEM AS A SOCIETY. UNFORTUNATELY, THE LESSON HASN’T YET BEEN LEARNED ON A WIDE ENOUGH SCALE. WE NEED EIGHT YEARS OF BERNIE SANDERS.

MY FIRST INTRODUCTION INTO HOW SOAP IS MADE, THOUGH, CAME FROM MY GRANDMOTHER. SHE TAUGHT ME TO CROCHET AND TOLD INTERESTING STORIES ABOUT LIFE IN THE OLD DAYS. THE FOLLOWING VIDEOS ARE AN OFFERING OF BLISSFUL PEACE IN THE TIME OF COVID-19.

HOW TO MAKE SOAP – THIS IS THE KIND OF THING THAT WE KNOW ALMOST NOTHING AT ALL ABOUT THESE DAYS, BUT MY GRANDMOTHER ACTUALLY DID IT WHEN SHE WAS YOUNG AND TOLD ME HOW. MY MOTHER REALLY DIDN’T LIKE TO HAVE HER LIVING WITH US, BUT SHE, LIKE MY FATHER, COULD RECITE LONG POEMS UPON REQUEST, AND TELL STORIES FROM THE LATE 19TH CENTURY IN THE SOUTHERN UNITED STATES. FOR INSTANCE, SHE SAID THAT WHEN SHE WAS YOUNG PEOPLE USED TO BE ABLE TO WALK ACROSS A CERTAIN FIELD AT THEIR HOUSE AND PICK UP CONFEDERATE UNIFORM BUTTONS OFF THE GROUND. MY FATHER WOULD FIND NATIVE AMERICAN ARROW HEADS IN THE SAME WAY. GRANDMA ALSO GOT UP OUT OF HER ROCKING CHAIR ONCE AND DID A SCOTTISH SWORD DANCE, AFTER DESCRIBING WHERE THE SWORDS WOULD LIE CROSSED ON THE FLOOR. SO, SHE COULD GET FIERY SOMETIMES, WOULD CRITICIZE MY MOTHER, AND LEFT AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF BISCUIT RESIDUE ON THE FLOOR WHILE EATING. I LIKED HER A GREAT DEAL.

TO FOLLOW UP ON HOW NEARLY EVERYTHING WAS MADE AND DONE AT HOME IN THE RURAL SOUTH, AND TO LEARN HOW TO DO IT AGAIN SHOULD OUR PRESENT-DAY UNITED STATES CITY AND SUBURBAN CULTURE DEGENERATE SPIRITUALLY AND CRUMBLE, LOOK UP THE SERIES OF BOOKS CALLED “FOXFIRE.” GO TO: https://www.foxfire.org/

THE CABBAGE IN THIS RECIPE IS NOT WILD, BUT THE GARLIC MUSTARD (A MEMBER OF THE CULTIVATED MUSTARD FAMILY) AND THE STINGING NETTLE ARE. YOU SHOULD, OF COURSE, LEARN SOMETHING ABOUT WILD PLANTS BEFORE TRYING TO EAT ANY OF THEM. THERE IS A WILD RELATIVE OF THE CARROT CALLED QUEEN ANNE’S LACE, WHOSE ROOT IS EATEN BY SOME PEOPLE. UNFORTUNATELY, IT STRONGLY RESEMBLES A HIGHLY TOXIC PLANT CALLED WILD HEMLOCK. THEY ARE DISTINGUISHABLE, BUT THE USER SHOULD LEARN ABOUT BOTH.

Wild Roasted Cabbage Recipe
Photograph -- Prep Time: 10 minutesCook Time: 30 minutesYield: Serves 2 to 3
This perfect blend of cabbage with garlic mustard, stinging nettle and other spices makes this a tasty, nutrient-dense meal.

INGREDIENTS

>> 1 head of cabbage
>> 4 to 6 tbsp olive oil
>> finely chopped garlic mustard
>> finely chopped onions
>> finely chopped garlic (or use garlic powder)
>> ground dried stinging nettle (or any other wild green)
>> salt and pepper
>> grated cheese (if desired)
>> 5 slices of bacon, cooked and crumbled (if desired)

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Place the cabbage on a chopping board. Cut into slices no more than 1/4" thick, be sure to hold the leaves together. You can make 4 or 6 slices. (If making 6 then use more oil to create a smooth paste with the spices.)

Brush the plain oil on the bottom of the slices then place on parchment paper covered baking sheet.

Add to the remaining oil the stinging nettle, salt, pepper and if not using fresh garlic, the garlic powder. Mix well. Brush this onto the tops of the cabbage slices.

Arrange on the tops of the cabbage the garlic mustard, then onions.

Bake 20 minutes. Take out of oven then add the chopped bacon and cheese. Place back into the oven and continue baking for another 15 minutes. (Or if making the vegan version bake a total of 30 minutes.)

An alternative to this recipe is to use a pesto instead of the spices in oil. Creating your own "pizza" using cabbage is by far a healthy alternative to pizza dough. Use finely chopped mushrooms, hot peppers, jalapenos, etc to personalize your wild roasted cabbage.)
