NEWS AND VIEWS

I AM GOING TO TRY TO GO BACK TO PRESENTING AT LEAST 6 TO 8 ARTICLES A DAY AS I DID BEFORE MY FALL IN MARCH OF 2019. I WILL NOT SACRIFICE SLEEP TO DO IT, THOUGH, BECAUSE THAT HABIT MAY HAVE BEEN THE CAUSE OF MY WEAKENED CONDITION AT THE TIME. MY NEW RESOLUTION IS GOING TO BE MODERATION, EXCEPT IN POLITICS.

ON THE NEVADA CAUCUSES, BERNIE DONE IT AGAIN!! BY THE WAY, THERE IS UPDATE AFTER UPDATE ON A NUMBER OF INTERESTING SUBJECTS AT THIS SITE, BUT I WILL LEAVE IT UP TO THE READER TO SEEK IT ALL OUT. AFTER ALL, BERNIE HAS ALREADY MOVED ON TO CALIFORNIA, ACCORDING TO YESTERDAY’S NBC ARTICLE. I AM GLAD TO SEE THAT HE IS FOCUSING ON UNITY. EVEN SO, THE STRONGER HE IS, THE BETTER HIS POSITION IN THAT UNITY WILL BE. HE WILL NEED TO NEGOTIATE TO GET THE NOMINATION, I’M SURE.

YOU WILL NOTICE THAT THERE WAS TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY WITH THEIR “HOTLINE” APP IN NEVADA SIMILAR TO WHAT HAPPENED IN IOWA, AND BUTTIGIEG IS CLAIMING “IRREGULARITIES.” I WOULDN'T DOUBT IT.  NBC, THOUGH, HAS DECLARED BERNIE THE VICTOR.

THERE HAS BEEN SOME TALK OF BANNING CAUCUSES IN THE FUTURE, AND I THINK THAT WOULD BE A STEP IN THE DIRECTION OF TAKING OUR ELECTIONS SERIOUSLY, RATHER THAN AS A “WINNER TAKE ALL” ROUGH SPORT. CHAOS IS NOT A GOOD WAY TO CONDUCT AN ELECTION. MARKED PAPER BALLOTS IS THE WAY TO GO.

Bernie Sanders was the winner of Saturday's Nevada caucuses, according to an NBC News projection.

Saturday's caucuses followed a fiery debate among the candidates earlier in the week in which Sanders, Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren challenged former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg on sexism and race and Amy Klobuchar sparred with Pete Buttigieg over their political experience.

Nevada is the first Western state in the Democratic presidential primary following New Hampshire and the chaos that was the Iowa caucuses.

Sanders focuses on unity after Nevada win

Sanders focused on unity today during a rally in Houston one day after winning the Nevada Caucus by what appears to be a considerable margin.

"Understand that we are in this together," Sanders said. "There is no family in America, no family, you think you're alone— you're not. There's no family in America that does not have its share of problems, trust me, alright? You think you're the only family, you're not. Every family has a problem and what America must be is an understanding that my family has got to care about your family. Your family has got to care about my family. And that as human beings we share a common humanity that we are in this together."

Despite 2020 Democratic candidates stepping up their attacks on Sanders, he, for the most part, did not take the bait. Sanders instead went off on Trump, and attacked Bloomberg for "buying the election."

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders recently won the New Hampshire primary and an internet user edited a mashup video featuring the United States Senator bang a coffee table with a fist. The Twitter user used a clip of comedian James Adomian dressed as the Democratic presidential candidate in November for a sketch in which he is actually interviewed by the 78-year-old. At one point in the skit, the actual Sanders pretended to slam a coffee table with his fist. This is an exact moment which has been edited by the Twitter user in repeat with background music of New Order’s single Blue Monday and said he will post it at every “big win” of Sanders.

Sanders declared victory in New Hampshire on February 11 after securing a narrow lead over Pete Buttigieg in the state's Democratic primary. Sanders who led the polls with 26 per cent and 90 per cent of the precincts reporting. After his triumph, Sanders said that his victory is the start of US President Donald Trump's end. The US Senator also called it the 'beginning of a revolution' and credited the Americans for his win.

Republic TV is an Indian television news channel.

Co-founded by Arnab Goswami (former editor-in-chief of Times Now), the channel was launched on 6 May 2017 as a free-to-air channel. The venture was primarily funded, among others, by co-founder Rajeev Chandrasekhar (then an independent legislator from the right-wing National Democratic Alliance) through his company Asianet News; Goswami became the majority owner on 6 May 2019, after Chandrasekhar pared his stake.[1]

Critical reception has been negative. It has been accused of practicing biased reporting in favor of the BJP and propagating fake news[2]. It has also been convicted of breaching TRAI and NBSA rules[3][4], leading to censures and subject to a high-profile defamation case by INC Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor[5][6][7].

Reason is the planet's leading source of news, politics, and culture from a libertarian perspective. Go to reason.com for a point of view you won't get from legacy media and old left-right opinion magazines.

That proposition was the subject of a November 5, 2019, debate hosted by the Soho Forum, a monthly debate series sponsored by Reason. Arguing in favor of the resolution was Richard D. Wolff, an economist at the University of Massachusetts and the author, most recently, of Understanding Marxism. Taking the other side was former Barron's economics editor Gene Epstein, who is also the Soho Forum's co-founder and director. Reason's Nick Gillespie served as moderator.

It was an Oxford-style debate, in which the audience votes on the resolution at the beginning and end of the event; the side that gains the most ground is victorious. It was a packed house, with about 450 people in attendance. The pre-debate vote found that 25 percent of the audience agreed that socialism was preferable to capitalism, 49.5 percent picked capitalism as the better system, and 25.5 percent were undecided. Despite a technical problem at the event itself, the Soho Forum was able to recover the final vote totals, which saw support for socialism drop by half a percentage point and support for capitalism increase to 71 percent.

HERE ARE TWO MEN WHO TALK TOGETHER SERIOUSLY ABOUT SERIOUS ISSUES, BERNIE SANDERS AND ROBERT REICH, WITH A LITTLE TIME FOR JANE SANDERS, WHOM BERNIE SOMETIMES CALLS “THE BRAINS.” ONE REPORTER ASKED HIM A QUESTION AND HE SAID HE’D HAVE TO TALK IT OVER WITH HIS WIFE. THE PUNDIT ASKED WHY, AND HE SAID “BECAUSE SHE’S BEAUTIFUL.” I THINK THAT’S A SWEET WAY OF REFUSING TO ANSWER AN IMPERTINENT QUESTION.

Anand Giridharadas: Are Elites Really Making the World a Better Place?

In “Winners Take All: The Elite Charade of Changing the World,” Anand Giridharadas compels us to take a deeper look at elite leaders, their institutions, and their initiatives to make the world a better place. “In the very era in which elites have done so much to help, they have continued to hoard the overwhelming share of progress, the average American’s life has scarcely improved, and virtually all of the nation’s institutions, with the exception of the military, have lost the public’s trust.”

Today's elites are some of the more socially concerned individuals in history. Yet, according to Giridharadas, while their philanthropic missions may attempt to reform the root causes of unjust systems, many elite initiatives serve only to maintain the very power structures they claim they want to fix. So, who really benefits? To what extent are the elite working to create real progress and systemic change for people and communities?

Anand Giridharadas was a foreign correspondent and columnist for the The New York Times and currently teaches journalism at New York University. He joins us for an in-depth discussion on elite leaders, how their philanthropic efforts preserve the unjust status quo, and how communities might work together to create a more participatory democracy.
