PROGRESSIVE OPINION AND NEWS
THIS MAY NOT BE RELATED TO THE CURRENT BORDER ISSUE BETWEEN INDIA AND CHINA AT ALL, BUT CHINA IN THE LAST YEAR OR SO
WAS IN THE NEWS FOR RAISING AMERICAN SUSPICIONS. THEY WERE AND PROBABLY STILL
ARE BUILDING ARTIFICIAL ISLANDS IN THE NEARBY OCEAN ON TOP OF ATOLLS TO BE
USED, POSSIBLY, TO CREATE A CLAIM TO DOMINANCE OF THE AREA AND MAYBE ALSO TO
PROVIDE GREATER OUTREACH FOR SURVEILLANCE TECHNOLOGY. CHINA HAS CHALLENGED
AMERICAN SHIPS A FEW TIMES IN THESE LAST FEW YEARS FOR BEING IN THEIR
TERRITORIAL WATER. IF THEY CREATE AN ISLAND, BUILD SOMETHING ON IT AND THEN CLAIM
OWNERSHIP THEY CAN INCREASE THEIR TERRITORIAL WATERS. I CONSIDER THAT
AGGRESSIVE, AND IF THEY ARE DOING SIMILAR THINGS IN INDIA’S LADAKH TERRITORY IT
IS A DISTURBING PATTERN OF BEHAVIOR. IT SHOWS AN EXPANSIONIST TURN OF MIND, AND
COULD LEAD TO A SERIOUS WAR THAT IN TURN COULD BECOME A NUCLEAR ONE. WE REALLY
DON’T NEED THAT ADDITIONAL PROBLEM.
THERE WAS A RECENT AGREEMENT ON JUNE 6, THE ARTICLE SAYS, BETWEEN
CHINA AND INDIA OVER THAT PATCH OF BORDERLAND. I’D LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THAT
IF I WERE GOING TO DIG INTO THIS FOR GREATER UNDERSTANDING.
WIKIPEDIA SAYS THAT THE DISPUTES OVER THE LADAKH GOES BACK TO
THE 1600S AD. THAT’S A LONG TIME TO HOLD A GRUDGE. ON THE OTHER HAND THERE
SEEMS ALSO TO HAVE BEEN A GOOD DEAL OF CULTURAL MIXING FROM TIBET AND INDIA MORE
GENERALLY AS MENTIONED IN THE WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE ON THE TERM “LADAKH”, VIA THE
ISLAMIC AND BUDHIST RELIGIONS, AND IN PART OF THE LADAKH BOTH INDIAN AND CHINESE
LANGUAGES ARE FOUND. THAT COULD BE PART OF WHERE THE CURRENT ILL WILL COMES
FROM. THERE MAY BE ONGOING CONFLICT WITH THE INDIA CONTROLLED TERRITORY.
FOR MORE ON THAT, GO TO: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ladakh.
IT SAYS, “ACADEMICS FIND STRONG INFLUENCES OF ZHANGZHUNG LANGUAGE AND CULTURE
IN "UPPER LADAKH" (FROM THE MIDDLE SECTION OF THE INDUS VALLEY TO THE
SOUTHEAST).[27] THE PENULTIMATE KING OF ZHANGZHUNG [A PART OF TIBET] IS SAID TO
HAVE BEEN FROM LADAKH.[28]”
FINALLY, SINCE THE END OF WORLD WAR II THE AREA HAS BEEN IN
DISPUTE, AS IT IS PART OF KASHMIR. PAKISTAN, INDIA AND CHINA ARE ALL INVOLVED
IN A COMPETITION OVER THE AREA, BUT FOR WHAT SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN “A BRAWL”
BETWEEN INDIAN SOLDIERS AND CHINESE TO BREAK OUT, THAT ACTUALLY KILLED A
SIZABLE NUMBER, THAT IS PRETTY INTENSE.
FROM THE WAY THIS STORY AND YESTERDAY’S GO, ON DISPUTED CLAIMS
OF OWNERSHIP AND THE EXACT LINES OF THE BORDER, IT SOUNDS AS THOUGH THE BORDER
IS NOT PRESENTLY CLEARLY MARKED AS WELL AS IT COULD BE IN SOME PARTS. IF IT IS
GENUINELY A MATTER OF CONFUSION, THEN THE UN SHOULD PERHAPS STEP IN AND BRING
AN ARMY OF SURVEYORS, WITH AGREEMENT FROM ALL PARTIES OF COURSE, TO CLARIFY THE
BORDER, THEN IF A DMZ IS NEEDED, MAKE ONE. OF COURSE, REAL PEACE WOULD BE
BETTER.
China lays claim to Galwan Valley, blames
India for border clash
China accuses Indian soldiers of instigating the fight in the
disputed Ladakh region that left 20 Indian soldiers dead.

China says the Galwan Valley where
Chinese and Indian troops were engaged in a deadly clash falls entirely within
its territory, as Beijing blamed New Delhi for the June
15 military clash at the border that left 20 Indian soldiers dead.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said in
a statement on Friday that the Galwan Valley, which is part of the disputed
Ladakh region, is located on the Chinese side of the Line of Actual Control
(LAC) - the de facto border between the two Asian rivals.

Zhao accused India of violating the agreement the two
countries had reached on June 6 regarding the LAC, calling it a
"deliberate provocation" on New Delhi's part.
He said that "the rights and wrongs ... are very clear and
the responsibility rests entirely with the Indian side".
In a series of tweets, Zhao said that Indians had since April
unilaterally built roads, bridges and other facilities in the region.
The statement contradicts Indian Foreign Minister
Subrahmanyam Jaishankar who had earlier said that the fighting erupted
after "the Chinese side sought to erect a structure in Galwan valley on
our side of the LAC".

Indian and Chinese troops have been engaged in an
eyeball-to-eyeball standoff at several points on their 3,500km (2,200-mile)
border, most of which remains undemarcated, since early May.
On June 15, 20 Indian soldiers were killed
in physical fights with Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley close to the
disputed Aksai Chin plateau claimed by India.
Soldiers brawled with clubs, rocks and their fists in the
thin air at 4,270 metres (14,000 feet) above sea level, but no shots were
fired, Indian officials have said. The soldiers carry firearms but are
not allowed to use them under a previous agreement in the border dispute.

It was the deadliest clash between the nuclear-armed neighbours
in decades, although China has not said whether it suffered any casualties.
According to Zhao, the fight was instigated by Indian
front-line soldiers, who "violently attacked" Chinese troops who
were in the area for negotiation.
"The adventurous acts of the Indian army have
seriously undermined the stability of the border areas, threatened the lives of
Chinese personnel, violated the agreements reached between the two countries on
the border issue and breached the basic norms governing international
relations," China's embassy in India said in a statement on
Saturday.
Also on Friday, Zhao said China was not holding any Indian
soldiers in the Himalayan border standoff between
the two countries, but has not directly addressed media reports that China
released 10 of them late on Thursday.
"My information is that at present there are no
Indian personnel detained on the Chinese side," Zhao said, according to an
English version of his daily briefing posted on the ministry's website.
Indian officials have denied that any soldiers were in Chinese
custody.

Commenting on China’s claim to the Galwan Valley, India's
foreign ministry spokesman Anurag Srivastava said on Saturday "attempts
by the Chinese side to now advance exaggerated and untenable" claims over
the LAC are "not acceptable".
"They are not in accordance with China's own position
in the past," he said in a statement, adding that Indian troops did not
cross the LAC and had been patrolling the area "for a long time".
Srivastava accused China of hindering India's "normal,
traditional patrolling pattern" in the area, which resulted in a
"face-off".
Army officers and diplomats have held a series of meetings to
try to end the impasse, with no breakthrough.
In a conversation with his Indian counterpart earlier this week,
Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on India to carry out a thorough investigation into
the incident and to "severely punish" those who should be held
accountable. Yi also called for a cessation of all provocative actions.
For its part, India initially said the incident was triggered
after Chinese soldiers crossed the boundary at three different points,
erecting tents and guard posts and ignoring several warnings to leave - thus
resulting in shouting matches, stone throwing and fist fights.
However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appeared to downplay the
incident, denying there had been any incursion into Indian territory.
"Nobody has intruded into our border, neither is anybody
there now, nor have our posts been captured," Modi said in a televised
speech on Friday, after he spent the day meeting representatives of parties
from across the political spectrum in a bid to build consensus to tackle the
rising tensions with China.
Nirupama Menon Rao, India's former foreign secretary, wrote
in a post on Twitter that Modi's statement was moulded by "asymmetry of
power with China".

But the main opposition Congress party's P Chidambaram
has raised questions about the tensions, pointing out that if there was no
border intrusion, then the 20 Indian soldiers should not have died.
Indian opposition legislators have also raised the issue of
whether intelligence failures had allowed China to build up forces in the area.
"Does the government not receive, on a regular basis,
satellite pictures of the borders of our country? Did our external
intelligence agencies not report any unusual activity along the LAC?" Sonia
Gandhi, the Congress party president, asked on Friday.
Facing heat from the opposition, the Indian government on
Saturday said "attempts are being made to give a mischievous
interpretation" to Friday's comments by Modi.
"As regards transgression of LAC (Line of Actual Control),
it was clearly stated that the violence in Galwan on 15 June arose because
Chinese side was seeking to erect structures just across the LAC and
refused to desist from such actions," the government said in a statement.

Geoffrey Berman, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of
New York whose tenure included investigations into a number of allies of
President Donald Trump, said Friday night that he has "no intention of
resigning" after he said he learned of his attempted ousting in a press
release from Attorney General William Barr.
The federal attorney's statement, in which he also announced his
intention "to ensure that this office's important cases continue
unimpeded," was a rapid fire response to Barr's Friday statement saying
that Berman "is stepping down."

The development sparked outrage from congressional Democrats.
"This late Friday night dismissal reeks of potential
corruption of the legal process," tweeted Senate Minority Leader Chuck
Schumer (D-N.Y.). "What is angering President Trump? A previous action by
this U.S. attorney or one that is ongoing?"
As the New York Times noted, Berman "and his team have been
at the forefront of corruption inquiries in Mr. Trump's inner circle."
Berman's office prosecuted Trump's former attorney and
"fixer" Michael Cohen and Rudy Guiliani associates Lev Parnas and
Igor Fruman. His office is also currently investigating Giuliani, Trump's
personal lawyer.
Further, CNN reported:
“Trump's former national security adviser John Bolton writes
in his forthcoming book that in 2018, Trump offered to help Turkish President
Recep Tayyip Erdogan with a Justice Department investigation into a Turkish
bank, Halkbank, with ties to Erdogan that was suspected of violating US
Iran sanctions. Trump, according to Bolton, told his Turkish counterpart
that the Southern District prosecutors "were not his people, but were
Obama people," and the problem would be fixed when they were replaced
by Trump. At the time, Berman had already been installed in New York office.”
In fact, the Associated Press reported that "Berman, a
Republican who contributed to the president's election campaign, worked for
the same law firm as Giuliani and was put in his job by the Trump
administration."
Berman, in his statement, pointed to investigations his office
is currently undertaking.
"I learned in a press release from the Attorney General
tonight that I was 'stepping down' as United States Attorney. I have not
resigned, and have no intention of resigning, my position, to which I was appointed
by the Judges of the United States District Court for the Southern District of
New York. I will step down when a presidentially appointed nominee is
confirmed by the Senate."
"Until then, our investigations will move forward without
delay or interruption," he continued. "I cherish every day that I
work with the men and women of this Office to pursue justice without fear or
favor—and intend to ensure that this Office's important cases continue
unimpeded."
Barr indicated in his Friday night statement that Trump plans
on nominating Securities and Exchange Commission chairman Jay Clayton—a Trump
nominee who's never been a prosecutor—to serve as the Manhattan office's top
prosecutor. Pending Clayton's Senate confirmation, Trump has appointed Craig
Carpenito, now the U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, to be the
Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, added
Barr.
Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) weighed in on the Friday night
developments, saying, "America is right to expect the worst of Bill Barr,
who has repeatedly interfered in criminal investigations on Trump's
behalf."
"We have a hearing on this topic on Wednesday," said
Nadler. "We welcome Mr. Berman's testimony and will invite him to
testify."

DOJ tries to fire US attorney who investigated Trump allies

The United States Department of Justice moved abruptly on Friday
to fire Geoffrey Berman, the attorney in Manhattan overseeing key
prosecutions of President Donald Trump's allies and an investigation of his
personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani.
But Berman said he was refusing to leave his post and his
ongoing investigations would continue.

"I have not resigned, and have no intention of resigning my
position," Berman said in a statement.
His statement came hours Attorney General Bill Barr said Berman
was stepping down from his position and that Trump intends to nominate
Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Jay Clayton to replace him.
The standoff set off an extraordinary clash between the Justice
Department and one of the nation's top districts, which has tried major mob and
"terrorism" cases over the years.
It is also likely to deepen tensions between the Justice
Department and congressional Democrats who have pointedly accused Barr of
politicising the agency and acting more like Trump's personal lawyer than the
nation's chief law enforcement officer.
VIDEO -- Trump, Bolton trade barbs as White House seeks to block

Barr did not explain the move in the statement he issued late on
Friday.
Hours later, Berman issued his own statement saying he had
learned that he was being pushed out through media reports. He
vowed to stay on the job until a Trump nominee is confirmed by the Senate.
The investigations he oversees will continue, he added.
The Associated Press news agency, citing people familiar with
the matter, said federal prosecutors in New York are investigating Giuliani's
business dealings, including whether he failed to register as a foreign agent.
The office has also prosecuted a number of Trump associates,
including Trump's former personal lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen, who served a
prison sentence for lying to Congress and campaign finance crimes.
Berman has also overseen the prosecution of two Florida
businessmen, Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, who were associates of Giuliani and
tied to the Ukraine impeachment investigation.
The men were charged in October with federal campaign finance
violations, including hiding the origin of a $325,000 donation to a
group supporting Trump's re-election.
A Republican who contributed to the president's election
campaign, Berman worked for the same law firm as Giuliani and was put in his
job by the Trump administration. But as US attorney for the Southern District
of New York, he won over some sceptics after he went after Trump allies.
Berman was appointed by then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions in
January 2018, months after Preet Bharara was fired after refusing to resign
along with dozens of other federal prosecutors appointed by President Barack
Obama.
VIDEO -- Bolton memoir - Trump sought Chinese help to win 2020
election (3:50)
Three months later, FBI agents raided Cohen's offices, an act
the president decried as a politically motivated witch hunt.
The following April, in the absence of a formal nomination by Trump,
the judges in Manhattan federal court voted to appoint Berman to the position
permanently.
He has taken a direct hand in other investigations that have
angered Trump.
His office subpoenaed Trump's inaugural committee for a wide
range of documents as part of an investigation into various potential crimes,
including possible illegal contributions from foreigners to inaugural events.
And weeks before the 2018 midterm election, Berman announced
insider trading charges against an ardent Trump supporter, Republican
Representative Chris Collins, who represented western New York. Collins has
since resigned.
Under Berman's tenure, his office also brought charges against
Michael Avenatti, the combative lawyer who gained fame by representing porn
actress Stormy Daniels in lawsuits involving Trump.
Avenatti was convicted in February of trying to extort Nike
after prosecutors said he threatened to use his media access to hurt Nike's
reputation and stock price unless the sportswear giant paid him up to $25m.
Bharara, the former attorney in Manhattan, said the timing and
manner of the move to replace Berman were strange.
"Why does a president get rid of his own hand-picked US
Attorney in SDNY on a Friday night, less than 5 months before the election?"
Bharara wrote on Twitter.

New Vatican Document Urges Fossil Fuel Divestment to Serve Planet
and the Common Good
"The Vatican's call for divestment is a breath of hope in
times when faith is more needed than ever," said 350.org co-founder Bill
McKibben. "It is a powerful statement that attempting to profit off the
destruction of the planet is plainly and simply immoral and unethical."

A new 226-page document issued by the Vatican on Thursday
was applauded by climate campaigners who said the new environmental guidance
from the Catholic Church and Pope Francis, including a call to divest
financially from the fossil fuel industry, exemplifies the positive and
far-reaching role that faith
organizations can play in the global effort to lower emissions and usher
in an era of spiritual as well as planetary rebirth.
With the text released so far only in Italian—and titled
"On the Journey for Care of the Common Home"—the new treatise
serves as a practical guide to help Catholics implement the Pope's 2015
encyclical Laudato Si’ which called on church followers to recognize climate
action as a duty of the faithful and urge people throughout the world to treat
Earth "like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother
who opens her arms to embrace us."
Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the
Vatican's equivalent of a foreign affairs minister for foreign affairs,
detailed the document at a Vatican news conference Thursday and placed the
imperatives contained in the document—which sets guidelines the Church's
dioceses, parishes, missions and movements around the globe—in the context of
the current "historical moment " that includes environmental degradation,
the coronavirus pandemic, and the many other challenges faced by a rapidly
warming and gravely inequitable world.
"The COVID-19 pandemic leads us to further experience the
socioeconomic, ecological and ethical crisis that we are living as the right moment
to stimulate conversation and make concrete and urgent decisions,"
Gallagher said.
INSERT -- "Faith groups continue to lead the way and
clearly indicate to the rest of the world that any future investments or
stimulus funds must exclude fossil fuels and yield long-term structural
emissions reductions. We must urge all sectors of society to use this
opportunity to accelerate the transition needed towards low- and
zero-carbon."
— Yossi Cadan, 350.org
According to the Vatican News,
the interdicasterial document examines the issue of climate
change, saying it has "a profound environmental, ethical, economic,
political, and social 'relevance'" which "impacts the poor above
all." Therefore, we first need "a new model of development" that
links the fight against climate change to the fight against poverty, "in
tune with the Social Doctrine of the Church."
Recalling that "no one acts alone," the document calls
for a commitment to "low carbon" sustainable development to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions. Proposals made in this area include the reforestation
of areas such as the Amazon rainforest, along with support for the
international process aimed at defining the category of "climate
refugee" to ensure them "necessary legal and humanitarian protections."
While Gallagher in his remarks acknowledged that President
Donald Trump has dragged the U.S. away from the previous commitments to robust
climate action—including his withdrawal from the Paris Agreement—the Archbishop
said there is still hope for America to rejoin the rest of the global community
in the fight.
"I think that humanity will not be blown off course by any
decisions by anybody," he said in a veiled reference to Trump. "But
obviously we welcome anyone coming back to the table."
The document, which emerges with the Pope's blessing, urges the
de-carbonization of the global economy and urges investment in "clean and
renewable" energy to protect the world's oceans, "the common good of
entire human family,' and ecological systems. It also promotes a more
sustainable "circular economy" that reduces exploitation of people
and natural resources and a reform to government subsidies of fossil fuels. In
addition to a tax on carbon and other forms pollution, the document encourages
Catholics to divest from oil, coal, and gas and to reinvest in life-affirming
forms of energy.
In response to the call, author and 350.org co-founder Bill
McKibben said it was a welcome development amidst otherwise dire landscape.
"The Vatican's call for divestment is a breath of hope in
times when faith is more needed than ever," McKibben said in a statement.
"It is also one of the handful of great moments in this decade-long
campaign. It is a powerful statement that attempting to profit off the
destruction of the planet is plainly and simply immoral and unethical."
Yossi Cadan, manager of the Global
Finance Campaign at 350.org, added that while the Pope's Laudato Si
—an unprecedented pronouncement when it was put forth five years—already made
clear Francis' sense of urgency in the climate crisis, the new document is
"a strong statement that the Vatican is supporting the call of many
institutions, companies, the youth and other groups who already showed that the
only way to rebuild our societies and economies is through a Just Recovery that
centers people's needs and not major polluters corporate interests, which led
us to the global climate crisis we face now."
America Magazine reports:
“Archbishop Gallagher said the text seeks “to relaunch the rich
contents” of an encyclical still relevant today and even more so in the light
of a world hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. It also aims to provide a guide to
reading “Laudato Si’” and for its practical implementation. Furthermore,
it seeks to encourage greater collaboration between the offices of the Roman
Curia and Catholic institutions worldwide that are already engaged in the
dissemination and implementation of “Laudato Si’.”
Tomás Insua, co-founder and executive
director of the Global Catholic Climate Movement and a participant on
the Vatican panel presenting the book, described the publication as “a road map
for the post-Covid-19 world.” He said it includes “so many great stories
from all corners of the globe and all sectors of the church,” including the
movement he leads, that illustrate ways in which the encyclical is already
being implemented across the world.”
350.org noted that while the global
fossil fuel divestment last month celebrated "the largest-ever
announcement of divestment by faith institutions" in history—with 42
institutions across 14 countries pledging to cut financial ties with the fossil
fuel industry—there is still a long way to go.
"Faith groups continue to lead the way and clearly indicate
to the rest of the world that any future investments or stimulus funds must
exclude fossil fuels and yield long-term structural emissions reductions,"
said Cadan. "We must urge all sectors of society to use this opportunity
to accelerate the transition needed towards low- and zero-carbon."

The elderly Buffalo peace activist shoved to the ground by cops
during anti-racism protests is still in the hospital with a skull fracture,
unable to walk. And here’s what the president of the United States had to say
about him: “Too bad he had to get hurt.” In an
interview with The Wall Street Journal, President Trump essentially said the
fact that Martin Gugino has a brain injury and can’t walk is his own fault. “These
police, they meant business,” he said of the night in question. “They were
walking and he puts himself right there. And you could tell they knew him. They
knew him. But he’s had a long history. Too bad he had to get hurt.” After the
incident, Trump tweeted that Gugino might be antifa, but has now backed off
that completely unsubstantiated claim. “That I don’t know,” he said. The
officers who shoved Gugino have been charged with assault.
